Competing Models

When seeking a new SUV, a variety of models appear as worthy competitors. However, despite the competition's strengths, ultimately the Ford Escape emerges as the victor once carefully compared with comparable models. The vehicles analyzed in comparison to the Ford Escape are the Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V. All vehicles feature seating for up to five passengers, and start at a comparable price for their respective base-level trims between $23,000 and $25,000, generally averaging in between those figures. All vehicles feature comparable warranties for roadside assistance and the drivetrain as well. However, the true differences arise when analyzing the finer details of these vehicles.

Power and Performance

At the base trim, these vehicles all fall within a narrow margin of one another. Every vehicle has an Inline Four-Cylinder engine, with varying displacements. The Ford Escape features a 168 horsepower, 170 pound-foot 2.5-liter Duratec engine with a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. However, the Ford Escape offers an additional two engines for various trims. Firstly, the 1.5-liter EcoBoost® turbocharged engine--producing 179 horsepower and 177 pound-feet, the 1.5-liter EcoBoost® boasts improved fuel efficiency, resulting in 26 combined miles per gallon. Lastly, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost® turbocharged engine delivers exceptional power and performance, exerting 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet.

The Chevrolet Equinox features a 170 horsepower, 203 pound-foot turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, also equipped with a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. However, the Chevrolet Equinox base trim does cost more than the Ford Escape, so the marginal power improvement comes at a cost. The Chevrolet Equinox, like the Ford Escape, also offers an additional two engines to select from. A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet delivers improved performance over the standard 1.5-liter engine, however the lower torque specifications ultimately result in inferior performance capabilities when performing tasks such as towing when compared to the Ford Escape. The Chevrolet Equinox does offer a 1.6-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 137 horsepower and 240 pound-feet, an impressive option, however even when equipped with the torque-heavy diesel powertrain the Chevy Equinox fails to usurp the impressive specifications of the Ford Escape.

The Toyota RAV4 offers comparable performance with its 2.5-liter, 176 horsepower and 172 pound-foot engine, and accompanying six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. However, the difference is negligible with the performance specifications being within single digits of one another. The Toyota RAV4 does offer one additional engine option, in the form of the same engine paired with an ECVT hybrid system to result in 194 horsepower as opposed to the standard 176. While this pairing does result in improved efficiency and lower emissions, the performance improvement fails to prove comparable to the impressive specifications found within the various engine options offered with the Ford Escape.

Lastly, the Honda CR-V offers 184 horsepower and 180 pound-feet with its 2.4-liter engine and accompanying CVT (continuously variable transmission). However, while offering slightly more power, the CVT equipped in the Honda CR-V drastically diminishes the performance. A CVT makes for smooth acceleration, however it does not allow the convenience and enhanced performance capabilities a shiftable automatic transmission with various gear speeds. Thus, the Ford Escape usurps the Honda CR-V with its integration of a formidable engine and transmission conducive to a variety of driving styles and applications. While the Honda CR-V does offer one additional engine available on higher trim levels, the performance improvements are negligible at best--the Inline Four-Cylinder found on the base trim receives a single-scroll turbocharger in conjunction with less displacement to improve performance and efficiency, raising the specifications to 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet. Despite the improvements received by lessening the displacement and incorporating a turbocharger, the Honda CR-V ultimately does not rival the performance capabilities found within the Ford Escape.

Interior and Technology

The Ford Escape and its competing models all feature similar quantities of cargo capacity. However, one particular dimension to consider while comparing capacity and leg room is the overall length of the vehicle. The Ford Escape features the shortest vehicle length of all comparable models above, with an overall length of 178.1 inches, as opposed to the 183.1-inch length of the Chevrolet Equinox, the Toyota RAV4's 183.5-inch length, and the Honda CR-V's 180.6-inch length. While seemingly minute, these dimensions greatly contribute to overall cargo capacity. The Ford Escape features a cargo space capacity of 34 cubic feet, while the Chevrolet Equinox has only 29.9 cubic feet. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V both offer more space, with 38.4 and 39.2 cubic feet, respectively.

However, the Ford Escape offers the most front leg room out of the four, with 43.1 inches. Thus, the Ford Escape delivers a surprising amount of interior space both for cargo and comfort within an overall smaller vehicle--resulting in more nimble handling and maneuvering while parking or negotiating city streets without compromising capacity.

While all vehicles' base trims offer cloth seating and their respective brands' entertainment systems, Ford's SYNC® system offers an intuitive layout and powerful software to provide drivers with the ease of access and convenience they desire without having to navigate a clunky, outdated interface. Further amended with BLIS®, FordPass, and a variety of safety features, the technology within the Ford Escape not only delivers entertainment for passengers and convenient features, but delivers safety enhancements as well.

Safety, Design, Trim Levels and Affordability

The Ford Escape boasts an NHTSA Five-Star safety rating, rating among the safest SUVs available. Furthermore, the Ford Escape's unique exterior and interior design provide drivers with the sophisticated comfort they desire without compromising safety, convenience, or performance. With four trim levels to select from, the S, SE, SEL, and Titanium, rest assured your particularly preferred balance between affordability, performance and luxury is easily achieved. Ranging from $23,940 up to $32,140, the Ford Escape offers drivers exceptional capability at an affordable price.
