Although the Ford F-150 has been the top-selling truck in America for decades, for some people, it does not offer quite enough power for what they are looking for. The Ford Super Duty series of trucks are full-size models with increased muscle and performance, including the heavy-duty F-350 and F-450. However, right in the middle of all these great options is the 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty. This is a heavy-duty pickup with greater towing capacity and payload than the F-150 while remaining a liveable every-day vehicle.

Performance with the Ford F-250 is truly amazing, with three different engines for you to choose from so you can get exactly the right amount of power for what you need. A 6-speed automatic transmission comes standard, though a 10-speed automatic is provided with the more powerful engines, giving you more precise performance. Maximum towing and payload capacities depend on your overall configuration, of course, though you can get up to 20,000 lbs of conventional towing or up to 4,260 lbs of maximum payload. Although maximum gooseneck towing is slightly higher with the Ford F-250, if that is a major interest for you, then the other Ford Super Duty models might be a better choice.

There are six different trims available for the 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty, which gives you a fantastic amount of flexibility to get the features and options you really need. Standard features include a front bench seat, a 2-inch productivity display in the instrument cluster, and a 4-inch infotainment display - though an 8-inch driver display and 8-inch infotainment display are both available. In addition to this, the F-250 is available with a Regular Cab, SuperCab, or Crew Cab, depending on how much interior space you want, as well as with either a 6.75-foot or an 8-foot box. Performance

The engine is important in any vehicle, of course, but it is especially vital when looking at something like a heavy-duty truck. After all, the kind of work and performance you get with your pickup will largely depend on the engine in it. So it is great to see that Ford offers three different engines for the 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty, letting you get exactly the right amount of power for what you need.

Engine Options

To start with, the standard engine in the F-250 is a 6.2L V8 gas engine that delivers 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque for great overall performance. If you want a more powerful gas engine, then there is an available 7.3L V8 option that provides 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque for excellent power under the hood. However, for unbeatable towing power, there is an available 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel engine, which delivers 475 hp and a massive 1,050 lb-ft of torque.

The standard 6.2L V8 engine comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which works well and makes daily use quite easy. The two more-powerful engines, however, come with a TorqShift 10-speed automatic transmission that is incredibly smooth and responsive. This is ideal for handling major towing loads, letting you always stay in control, and giving you the power you need from moment to moment.

Towing and Payload

You have no shortage of trucks available to you, including the midsize Ford Ranger and the light-duty Ford F-150. But if you are interested in a heavy-duty model like the 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty, then you likely want to be able to handle some serious towing and payload. Fortunately, the F-250 definitely comes through and offers amazing capability, though it does depend on the configuration and engine you choose.

Tow Ratings

With the standard 6.2L V8 engine, the Ford F-250 has a maximum conventional towing capacity of up to 15,000 lbs and a maximum gooseneck towing capacity of up to 15,800 lbs. If you choose the 7.3L V8 gas engine, then you can get the same amount of conventional towing, but it can handle up to 19,500 lbs of gooseneck towing. With the available 6.7L Turbo Diesel engine, the Ford F-250 can offer up to 20,000 lbs of conventional towing and up to 22,800 lbs of gooseneck towing. As you can see, gooseneck towing is greater across the board, but the difference is generally not massive. For significantly greater gooseneck or 5th-wheel towing, consider the Ford F-350 or F-450 Super Duty models in their dual rear wheel configurations.

Payload Figures

In terms of payload, the engine matters - but so does the configuration you choose. A Regular Cab will give you the greatest overall payload since it weighs less than the Crew Cab. With the Regular Cab, you can get up to 4,260 lbs of maximum payload with the 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty, while the SuperCab can get up to 3,980 lbs of maximum payload, and the Crew Cab can manage up to 3,880 lbs of maximum payload. Keep in mind that the shorter box option will also give you a greater payload than the longer, heavier box.

Configuration

One of the great things about the 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty is that even though it is a medium-duty pickup designed to be a workhorse, you still get a lot of options for setting it up. There are three different cab sizes and two different bed lengths for you to choose from. For the most part, you have great freedom in combining these together and getting the trim and other options you want, though there are a few restrictions to keep in mind.

Cab Choices

The smallest cab is the standard Regular Cab, which does not have any rear seating and is available for the Ford F-250 only with an 8-foot box. If you want seating for additional passengers, then you can choose the SuperCab, which gives you a rear bench seat and more room for cargo behind the front seats. You can also choose a Crew Cab, which offers even more room for passengers and cargo as well as four full-size doors, making it a great option if you tend to have four or five people in your truck. Both the SuperCab and the Crew Cab are available with either a 6.75-foot box or a longer 8-foot box.

It is worth noting that there are some trim restrictions on some of these combinations. The standard XL and XLT trims are available with all five combinations, while the Lariat trim does not have the Regular Cab available. If you are interested in one of the three highest trims, then you can only get them with a Crew Cab.

Interior

Since you will spend most of your time with your truck sitting in the cab, you should make sure you get the best interior options you can. With six different trims to choose from, you can find a wide range of interior comfort and technology features. Just keep in mind that you have a lot of optional features you can choose from, even on lower trims.

The base 2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty, which is the XL trim, includes heavy-duty vinyl seating, single-zone manual climate control, and a 2-inch LCD productivity screen in the instrument cluster. It also has a 4-inch LCD infotainment screen in the center stack, an AM/FM radio with MP3 support, and a standard sound system. Available options for the XL include cloth seating, front bucket seats rather than a bench, and a 4-inch productivity display.

Available Options

If you choose the highest trim, the Limited, then you get some significant upgrades to many of these features. The Limited includes front bucket seats, with a power 10-way adjustable driver seat and an 8-way adjustable front passenger seat, which are heated and ventilated. You also get cruise control with the Limited, along with an 8-inch productivity display in the instrument cluster, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control, and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel. Finally, the Limited - as well as most of the higher trims - comes with an 8-inch infotainment display and a 10-speaker B&O sound system.
