  • Overview

The Ford F-Series of trucks includes more than just the bestselling F-150, though that is certainly the first model that comes to mind for most people. While the impressive capability of the F-150 is more than sufficient for the majority of truck owners, if you need something with even more power, then it is time to consider a Super Duty model. The 2022 Ford Super Duty lineup includes some of the most powerful and impressive trucks we have ever seen. If you like the style and reliability of a Ford truck and need more muscle than the F-150 can manage, then these are the trucks for you.

There are three different models available within the Ford Super Duty lineup: the F-250, F-350, and F-450. All of them are full-size and designed as heavy-duty pickups. The exact level of performance that you can get from them in terms of towing and payload depends on which model you choose and the configuration you go with – including the engine. If you pick the F-250 or F-350, then you have three different engines to choose from, while the F-450 has the incredible 6.7L Turbo-Diesel V8 only, which delivers 1,050 lb-ft of torque.

In general, the kind of towing and payload capacity you can get increases with each truck: the F-250, then the F-350, and finally, the F-450 is an absolute beast. Maximum towing with the F-450, for example, goes up to 37,000 lbs, and the F-250 can handle up to 22,800 lbs of maximum towing. As you can see, while this is a pretty wide range of capabilities, they are very impressive across the board, and all of the 2022 Ford Super Duty trucks give you access to remarkable power and capability.

  • Performance

The heart of any vehicle is the engine, and in few cases is that as important as when you are looking at a full-size truck. So much of what a truck can do really comes down to the power of its engine and the performance it can deliver, especially when you look at capability in terms of towing and payload. You always want to choose a pickup with enough muscle under the hood to handle anything you need to get done. There are three different engines available for the 2022 Ford Super Duty, though there are some limits based on specific models.

    You Engine Options

With the Ford F-250 and F-350, you can choose from all three engines, starting with a 6.2L Flex-Fuel V8 engine that offers 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. For a lot of drivers, this is going to be sufficient power to make the Super Duty models excellent options to get a lot of work done. If you need even more power but still want a gas engine rather than a diesel option, then there is an available 7.3L OHV PFI V8 engine available, which delivers 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. This might not seem like a huge upgrade on paper, but it does give you significantly greater towing capacity with these models.

Finally, there is also a diesel engine available for the F-250 and F-350, which is the only engine offered on the incredibly powerful F-450 Super Duty. This is a 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo-Diesel V8 engine that roars to life with 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. As you can see, this is not a huge boost to horsepower compared to the impressive 7.3L V8 gas engine, but the torque increase is truly remarkable. The design of this engine is all about power, with a 36,000-psi fuel injection system and maximum horsepower at lower rpm than any other engine in this class.

  • Capability

Impressive engine specs and great technology are certainly important, but at the end of the day, most people checking out one of the Ford Super Duty options are looking for real capabilities. Horsepower is great for bragging, but when push comes to shove, you want a truck that can handle anything you throw at it. The amazing thing about the 2022 Ford Super Duty trucks is that not only do they have massive horsepower and torque numbers for unbeatable bragging rights, but they also can manage weights that put most other trucks to shame.

As you might expect, the capability and power that you get from a Ford Super Duty model will depend on which truck you choose and the engine you go with. To keep things simple, we will take a look at the maximum towing and payload that you can get with each of these trucks. Remember that towing refers to how much weight you can pull behind you, while the payload is the amount of weight you can load onto the truck – including passengers and all cargo.

A Wide Range of Towing and Payload Capabilities

The 2022 Ford F-250 with its standard engine can have up to 15,800 lbs of towing capacity to pull a lot of weight behind you; that is nearly 2,000 lbs more than the maximum towing with the F-150. If you choose the available 7.3L V8 engine, then you can get up to 19,500 lbs of maximum towing capacity and up to 4,260 lbs of maximum payload. With the 6.7L Turbo-Diesel engine, you get up to 22,800 lbs of maximum gooseneck towing and more than 3,900 lbs of maximum payload.

You can also get all three engines with the Ford F-350, starting with the standard engine that offers up to 16,700 lbs of maximum towing. The available 7.3L V8 engine boosts that to up to 21,200 lbs of maximum towing, while the turbo-diesel option gives you up to 35,750 lbs of maximum gooseneck towing. If a huge payload is your main concern, then the F-350 offers the best maximum payload for the Super Duty lineup, with up to 7,850 lbs of payload when properly configured.

Finally, the single-engine option for the F-450 can handle up to 37,000 lbs of maximum towing capacity with a gooseneck configuration and up to 6,210 lbs of maximum payload. Keep in mind that you cannot quite reach these numbers with conventional towing, but all three trucks are still very impressive. The F-250 offers up to 20,000 lbs of conventional towing; the F-350 gives you up to 21,200 lbs of conventional towing with a dual-rear-wheel setup, and the F-450 can handle up to 24,200 lbs.

  • Technology

You might not immediately focus on technology when looking at a hardworking truck like one of the 2022 Ford Super Duty models, but you should. The technology in these vehicles can help you stay connected between job sites, make using your truck a lot easier, and even improve safety and efficiency when hooking up to a trailer. One of the updates for the 2022 models is that a 12-inch infotainment display is now available, which is perfect for staying connected to coworkers, checking in on job sites, and much more.

There is a large center console that makes for a great work surface, with plenty of room for a laptop, tablet, or anything else you need. A 10-speaker B&O sound system is available, which can certainly make long drives more enjoyable, while an available wireless charging pad is perfect for keeping your phone charged on the road. Available upfitter switches on the overhead console are perfect for use with aftermarket accessories like a winch, additional exterior lights, or a two-way radio – these switches are factory-installed and easy to use.

One of the most impressive pieces of tech in the 2022 Ford Super Duty models is the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system. This lets you adjust the position of your trailer while backing up by simply rotating a knob on the front dashboard, giving you incredible precision and control. When combined with the Ultimate Trailer Tow Camera System with Pro Trailer Backup Assist, it is easy to quickly get hooked up to a trailer and maneuver your trailer at a job site.
